3D30.70 • Resonance in Air Columns: Hoot Tubes

Location: Cabinet 6

Instructions / Notes:

• 4 ft and 3-1/2 ft glass tubes have wire screens near one end.
• Hold the tube over the burner so that the screen is in the flame.
• Heat until the screen glows.
• The tube hoots when it is removed from the flame.
• The sound stops when the tube is held horizontally.

Demo Staff:

• We do not test this in the demo lab.
• Leave the tubes in the box; the professor will take them out as needed.
