2C40.10 • Water Bottle Vortex
Location: Cabinet 2
Concepts Conveyed:
- By observing the water’s motion, we see the centrifugal force and its effect on rotational movement.
- The partial vacuum demonstrates how pressure affects the speed of the water’s rotation.
- The water flows to a lower energy state while draining.
Instructions / Notes:
- Screw the orange device to the top of a bottle filled with water.
- Screw an empty bottle, oriented upside down, to the top of the orange device.
- Flip the bottle so that the bottle with water is now oriented on top, then stir the apparatus in a circular motion to create a vortex, allowing the water to flow from the top bottle into the bottom.
- This process can be repeated to show how the speed of the drainage is faster than non-vortex draining.
