6A43.10 • Refraction at Curved Surfaces: Water Beads
Concepts Conveyed:
- The water beads and water have similar refractive indices, causing light to pass through both at nearly the same angle.
- The lack of contrast between the bead and the surrounding water causes them to "disappear" and become nearly invisible due to the minimal refraction difference.
Instructions / Notes:
- Prepare the water beads in a clear container.
- Prepare a separate container of water.
- The professor can then fill the container with beads with water.
- Optional: Provide laser pointer to showcase the angle of the beam is not affected by the beads
Demo Staff:
- If more beads are needed, make sure to place new ones in water the day before so they can grow overnight.
